Firstly, I have to express my love for these over the top, slightly kitsch, royal palaces. Especially those ones built in that great decade of Art Deco colourful influence. These grand old dames, are often faded around the edges; with slow service and their own concept of hotel management – think faulty towers crossed with a colonial golf club. However, I love their huge rooms, art deco bathrooms, smiling local staff with limited English and huge grounds; complete with a 1920’s swimming pool for a refreshing dip.
Roop Niwas was originally built on the outskirts of Nawalgarh, by the warrior and statesman, Thakur Nawal Singhji; as a country house on 150 acres land; which was mainly used for stabling and grazing the family’s favourite Marwari horses. The current building is unchanged from a 1920’s major re-design, with a hint of art deco and bags of colourful charm. Huge rooms and not too many steps compared to other royal residences.
